Lambeth Ark/Ashmolean museum contributors 1827'Portraits of the Tradescants' John Tradescant the elder (c. 1570 1638) and his son John the younger (1608 1662) were Royal gardeners. In 1629 they came to live at Lambeth, close to where the Garden Museum now stands, and planted a botanical garden. They displayed his collection of natural history, art and ethnography; known as the Ark, this was the first Museum in Britain to be open to the public.
